Maharashtra Ex Minister Baba Siddique Shot Dead Near Son's Office In Mumbai
Mumbai: Baba Siddique, a former Maharashtra minister and member of the Ajit Pawar faction of the NCP, tragically passed away after being shot in Mumbai’s Bandra area. The incident occurred around 9:30 pm on Saturday near the office of his son, Zeeshan Siddique, who is the MLA from Bandra East. According to sources, six bullets were fired, and two suspects have been arrested.
Mr. Siddique was immediately rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where it was confirmed that four bullets had struck the 66-year-old leader, and one of his aides also sustained a gunshot wound. The shooting took place on Dussehra, just months before the Maharashtra Assembly elections, which are expected later this year.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his condolences and stated that he had spoken to the police and doctors at the hospital. He emphasized the need for strict action to prevent any gang-war-like situations from resurfacing in Mumbai. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio, visited the hospital, while Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar expressed his shock and grief over the loss of a valued colleague and friend.
Baba Siddique, a three-time MLA from Bandra West, had been associated with the Congress for 48 years before joining Ajit Pawar’s NCP in February. His son, Zeeshan Siddique, was expelled from the Congress in August. NCP Spokesperson Brijmohan Shrivastav mentioned that Mr. Siddique had not reported any threats prior to the incident.
Mr. Siddique was known for his political acumen and for hosting lavish parties. Notably, he played a role in resolving a cold war between superstars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan at an ‘iftar’ party in 2013. Both Salman Khan and actor Sanjay Dutt have reached the hospital to pay their respects.
The incident has raised serious questions about law and order in Mumbai. Opposition leaders have expressed their concerns, questioning how a politician with Y-level security could be killed in a public and upscale area like Bandra. NCP President Sharad Pawar called for accountability and urged government officials to step down, citing the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar also criticized the state government, alleging that it has supported criminals and allowed such incidents to occur.
